Why we need dentists more than ever!

"If someone offers you an opportunity, and you are not sure if you can do it, say yes then learn HOW to do it later"

~Richard Branson

My friends Dr. Scott and Coral Budd keep it real with challenges while in isolation...

It wasn't until the BRONZE AGE before the wheel was invented! You thought it was a caveman! Mankind was already casting metal alloys, constructing canals and sail boats, and even designed complex instruments like the harp....all before someone figured out how to connect a stable, stationary platform to a cylinder rolling on its edge!

Someone recognized an opportunity!

Think of how this idea spread and changed the world as we know it! Brilliant!

Whenever mankind has faced a challenge - there is always someone willing to take on the challenge and solve the problem. Some of these problems are very complex. Maybe the challenge we even face today.

The challenges and history of dentistry

In 1723 Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon publishes The Surgeon Dentist, A Treatise on Teeth (Le Chirurgien Dentiste).

Pierre Fauchard is credited as the father of modern dentistry and published the book "Le Chirurgien Dentiste". The Surgeon Dentist defined a comprehensive system for caring for and treating teeth.  Fauchard also first introduced the idea of dental fillings and the use of dental prosthesis and identified that acids from sugar led to tooth decay.

Brilliant!

The Little Medicinal Book for All Kinds of Diseases and Infirmities of the Teeth

Pierre wasn't the first dude(tte) to come up with the idea of treating teeth. We know human beings were treating teeth in some form or factor as far back as 7,000 BC! For several thousand years mankind believed it was a worm that caused decay....gross!! Although the "bugs" that cause it today under a microscope aren't much sexier to think about and is a BIG reason for this blog today....

In 1840, Baltimore college of dentistry was established offering training. Alabama led the way by enacting the first dental practice act in 1841, and nearly 20 years later, the American Dental Association (ADA) was formed. The first university-affiliated dental institution, the Harvard University Dental School, was founded in 1867. (cited from ADEA.org)

COLGATE invented a powder to help people clean their teeth daily..... The powder for teeth came a YEAR before the brush....weird...but again, opportunity! PREVENTIVE CARE has always been PARAMOUNT to dentistry. For over 150 years patients have been educated on the importance of Oral Health! The Toothpaste market is now a $26 BILLION market projected to grow to $37 BILLION by 2024! That' HUGE growth!

We all know why!!

We need dentists MORE THAN EVER!

New Orleans Dentist Levi Spear Parmly (we need to remember these cool names!) promulgated the use of dental floss...creating even more education and campaigns for the public on the IMPORTANCE of oral health to TOTAL HEALTH!

The FLOSS market in 2018 was over $450 MILLION and growing FAST!

WE NEED DENTISTS WORLD WIDE MORE THAN EVER!

Fauchard lived in different times, but not really....

Do you think Pierre Fauchard ever imagined a world so sophisticated. That an entire multi billion dollar world wide health care industry for the prevention of disease would be the result? Toothpaste and floss?

...and the wheel keeps turning....

Since the days of Fauchard wrote the modern book on dentistry our world has faced:

Pandemics and epidemics:

-1793 Yellow Fever

-1860 to 1890, 30 years of plagues..bubonic, cholera....and finally the first vaccine!

-1901 Smallpox breakout

-1918-1919 Spanish flu

-1952 Polio

-2003 SARS

-2009 H1N1

-Typhoid fever, Measles, Tuberculosis are all responsible for large amounts of deaths per year and we still see concerns about Ebola, and more recently Zika....

Modern dentistry responded!! On the recommendations of OSHA, CDC and government agencies health care providers have increased Infection prevention controls.

Financial Crisis

Since "modern dentistry" has grown - there have been many financial crisis.

-The credit crisis of 1772 led to the Boston Tea Party

-The Great depression 1929-1939

-OPEC price shock 1973

-1997 The Asian Crisis during which the IMF helped prevent countries from default

-2007-2008 Financial crisis.

Look how many of these financial crisis have happened in many of our own lifetimes! Every time, a lesson is learned and the recovery times take less and less time. The world WANTS and NEEDS to keep moving forward!

It is during these toughest times that human beings innovate. Find not only ways to survive - but to THRIVE!

How about the business and future of Dentistry?

There is no other world wide health care provider I can think of that has focused so intentionally on preventive care.

The world is listening!

Dentistry is and will continue to be one of the FASTEST GROWING segments of health care for a reason! Emerging markets are realizing the VALUE of PREVENTIVE care to TOTAL HEALTH!

According to Statista the global market for dentistry in 2019 was $44.5 BILLION with a CAGR of 5.59% projected.

We can segment this care - but the reason the world needs dentists more than ever has a lot to do with the services they have been providing. Services EVERY human being needs...

The future of dentistry starts today

The future of dentistry is all about continuing to recognize how important of a role dentistry plays in healthy immune systems!!

Wouldn't it be AMAZING if the most convenient located, accessible healthcare providers in the world were in fact the FRONT LINE to test and help IDENTIFY the COVID virus? How about future possible PREVENTION of outbreaks?

We are already providing services to a world full of other deadly diseases every day. Taking HUGE precautions to prevent any transmissions. Implementing very high standards of infection prevention protocols....

Dentistry IS modus operandi focused on prevention. Dentistry has a world wide, regular access to the population in the most convenient locations offering the most convenient times. Offering public and private care in most every country in the world.

What opportunities do you think lie in the most convenient located, accessible, highly educated health care providing businesses in the world?
